Why is it that i can vividly remember Angus handing out dark chocolate after a campmeal, Dave explaining to a Masai warrior how his camera works, Jon poking and blowing in a campfire to get it going, yet the memory of scary visions, the smell of blackfumed trucks roaring past and the uneasy feeling when there was quarreling again, slowly fades away? I know that Journey to the Source has been far from easy at many different times, but right now, i am only grateful that i had an amazing six week adventure with these three men :)

JADA plus our Zanzibari 'extra', Dave 2

Karibu Karatu (and beyond)

The team has landed on Zanzibar after arriving in Karatu by bicycle and a three day safari in Serengeti and Ngorongoro parks. Three of our bicycles were donated to local schools in the Lake Eyasi area (where they will come in very handy for carrying water and general transportation use) and one was donated to a local in the Arusha area. Goodbye dear Fonix-es!

Uploading photos and movies proves to be somewhat of a challenge right now and will have to wait a bit longer, but here are two of the temmembers' experiences from last week.

ANGUS

Well, the cycling portion of Journey to the Source has concluded. We cycled from Pangani on the coast of the Indian Ocean to Karatu, a dusty town 15 kilometres from the gate to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park. It would have been great to cycle to Olduvai (Oldupai) Gorge where the oldest human remains on Earth were discovered. However, the gorge lies inside the conservation area and all visitors must be in motorized vehicles... and the guards weren't fooled by the cardboard cut-out of a Toyota Land Cruiser strapped to the sides of our bicycles. :)

After an amazing 3-day safari in the national park and crater, we were driven back to Arusha in about 2 hours. It was neat to see the landscapes and towns we have cycled past on bicycles during the last week. But, it felt weird to not be cycling... almost like we were cheating in some sense.

Along our journey we have met a variety of people and had insightful discussions with them about issues of concern in Tanzania including the lack of a social safety net, the impact of climate change on agriculture, the rising price of gasoline, the development of a car culture, the need to raise awareness of forestry issues among the general public, the changing practices in agriculture towards organic foods, and the disposal of garbage. Some people we had planned to meet ahead of time, and wonderfully, several of the people we bumped into simply by chance.

It is an eye-opening experience to witness the current state of Tanzania. I am impressed with the high proportion of people we meet who are engaged in activities to help themselves, their families and their country. There are some friendly and inspiring individuals working towards a positive future for the people and environment of Tanzania.

Although the major cycling portion of our journey is finished, the journey will continue for at least a week as we explore the island of Zanzibar and its surrounding marine environment.

DAVE: Notes from the wildlands (Serengeti)

Note 1
I sit, shrouded cosily in a massi blanket, exhilerated and content under the emerging stars and moon. Before me a vasst chasm patiently rests - the Ngorogoro crater - a place of myths and enchanted life. A noble tree spreads its branches mindflly over the tents huddled around it and is siloutted by star and moon splashes behind. The atmosphere is warm and kindred despite the chill in the air. Chatter floats on the wind and laughs arise from the bustling kitchen and dinning huts, and friends round tents. This is a unique and magical place and there is an energy of life's wonders pervading around.

Note 2
Earlier, as we arrive after a stunning day on the plains, a 'magestic' and awesome Bull Elephant saunters in the nearby bushes. Behind, the gully receeds into the sunset and the upper crater rim - rich deep green forest tangling around. Magnificent white tusks sway to and fro as this wise soul munches on the nearby branches, swinging its trunk lazily for the next mouth full. Suprisingly light footed, our friend is seemingly indifferent to our exposed company just fifteen meters away, and, after a time, easily strolls between the waiting trees into the forest.

Note 3 - Serengeti Soul!
A more vast space I have never known. A sea of grass lands extends in all directions to hazy far off African horizons, interupted only by the odd mountain range in the distance. Free from human presence (minus the swarm of safari vehicles! - but don't look that way) the space attains a unique ayre. This is a place that ozzes wilderness and rhythms deeper than our busy distracted human world is used to. There is a timelessness and grandness to the plains. Islands of ancient granite (some of the oldest rock on earth, formed over 2.5 billion years ago) prutrude from the ocean of grasslands, like tropical havanas in the Pacific). These serve as home bases and the place of communuity for many residents.

Zooming along with the warm, enveloping wind on one's face, the blue sky towers all around and the crisp stalks push through dry soil on endless savana...freedom, "overawenees" and a feeling of deeptime, deeplife and deep nature fills your spirit.

There! a lioness strawls, her cubs playing nearby. Awesome muscle ripples under tight skin, toned and well feed, but lean and athletic. The zebras, gazelle and giraffes too exhibit extreme physical conditioning...these are creatures that need to be in peak shape to survive - magnificant specatacles

Note 4 - Serengeti departure
As we pass under the gate of the serengeti and back into the NCA (crossing only what is a manmande line, but none the less marks the return of permanent human inhabitants in the form of Massi tribesmen)...I saviour those last moments..knowing I will remember with fondness and awe the world behind, and knowing that the serengeti has touched my most fundamental depths

On a street in Moshi - Worlds collide

The man walks through the bustle and colourful caos Moshi's bus station, an eccentric node on the never ceasing network of human movement and transition - like a hive, darting, swerving and moving.

He is laden down by a bags, one on the back and on smaller the front, and the bright yellow bundle of a tent ads to an impression of excess. There is little in the pack other than a few t-shirts and some boots, but the picture is combersome enough.

The man strides down the dusty street, between street stalls, wofts of bbq maize, piles of ndizi (banana's), and moves to rhythms pf 'bongo flavour' squeaking out of the portable radio on the other side of the road.

The flavour and scent of coffee is on his mind - as he absorbs the foreign scenes all around.

There on the road sits another man. Older than our traveller, with thicker skin, textrued and learned. He is darker, from the sun but also heritage - he belongs here. His knee is brandished, disfigured in a thick smooth white scar, and joints strain and twist. Outstretched before him his hand shakes and asks. It looks down the rugged edge of the footpath to the approaching traveller laden down with possesions and wealth.

What a site it must be from that hand? What does it see as it wavers at the approaching figure - stark with contrast perhaps...or are they so different?

The traveller is troubled as worlds collide. Why does he think this, as he turns the corner to satisfy his coffee lust.

The coffee shop is shut - and the traveller is saved his highest moral dilema of indulging in such opulance whilst leaving that other hand wavering unfilled.

Is it right to eat/drink with exhuerance right next to such poverty? I was standing stooped over the people sitting in the front of the mini-van for the short trip. Dave and I hopped off in downtown Arusha and I spotted a young man selling a bucket full of a sugary peanut snack - sweet!

As I was deciding how many pieces to purchase, I suddenly realized I forgot my backpack on the dalla dalla. Oh ****! According to Dave, my face went completely white. Grasping my bicycle wheel in one hand and a peanut snack in the other, I madly ran with Dave up the street. Dave asked people where our dalla dalla's final stop was. After a few blocks we came across the final stop and a line-up of dalla dallas. I spotted our driver and was sooooooooooo relieved when my backpack appeared from the back of the dalla dalla. Whew!

Later that day, Dave and I visited the Arusha Museum and spotted a display titled 'The Great Journey'. A Japanese researcher had retraced the ancient migration of humans across the planet, except he did it in the reverse direction. Starting from the tip of South America, he travelled under human power (hiking and cycling) north through the Americas, kayaked across the Bering Strait, crossed Asia, the Middle East, and down the eastern side of Africa to Tanzania - to the site of the oldest human remains. Completed in 2002, his journey took over nine years and he met many indigineous groups of people. He did take breaks to return to Japan each year to write about his journey. Even so, it kind of makes our journey feel short... :)

Lake Manyara

DAVE

A day in Africa. A day on the road. A day of moments and exchanges, of vistas and sites, smells and tastes. One day on a journey - you can live a great deal.

As we have made our way from thriving Moshi to 'Africa's Geneva' Arusha, across the plains into the rift valley and now to the very shadow of its western escarpment in the town of Mto wa Mbu (River of Mosquitos) - it feels as if we have been touched by the real rhythm of Africa's Land. The sun has blazed into sunset behind Mt Meru, as Mt Kilimanjaro adhorned itself with orange light further to the east. Vast grasslands stretch out, interupted only by the plumes of dust trampled into the air by passing herds of Maasi cattle, layers of hilltops receed into the seemingly endless distance, bomas (huts) of massi dot the landscape, and Lake Manyara glistens like a silver thread under the approaching escarpment of the rift valley as it emerges from the haze.

Giant Malibu Stalks 'gracfully' slide into the upper branches of the trees overhead, squarking and rustling as the forest strains to hold them aloft on their perches. Higher still a flock of 30 or more spiral into the vibrant blue sky. Three baboons move just behind that bush and suanter arogantly off the road, while acorss the velvet smooth lakeside grasslands buffalo peruse the scene.

In amongst this all, are the moments and exchanges of conversation of those met on the journey.

I stop to 'capture' that postcard Baobob tree with my lens, and in the mean time a pair of amused maasi warrious recline on their sticks alongside my bike. 'Habari - unapenda wapiu muzungu?". A small amount of common verbal language is enough to be company for each other for a few mins - each party as interested as the other in what is before them. Later as I push my pheonix up the steep escarpment road, three young boys are playing beside the road (the stunning view of a tiring day's light falling on the glassy smooth surface of Lake Manyara behind them, as Africa's famous soft red light comes into its own). They laugh at my bike's air horn - toot toot! That seems to be funny where ever you do it in the world. I stop and swap names and greetings...laugh some more and say farewell. Earlier I was sitting with a Maasi in his mother's hut. His father owns this small 'village' complete with his 9 wives and a hut for each of them, which he roves as he wishes. The young Massi beside me is becoming a warrior - his bush training and circumcission trial soon to be faced - as he hopes to make that vital progession to his destiny. Now I am beating a drum, the two Malawian's beside me (artists here in Town) groving and showign me the way.

The day ends...and half way up in the sky, amongst the shooting stars the southern cross peers down, a familiar friend, in a foreign but friendly and increasingly captivating land.

A day in Africa can be a rich lifetime.

Masai men

JON

Thankfully good news has come from Zimbabwe, (my last post from the Summit blog), and Ben Freeth and others have been found, although badly beaten (article), their strength remains formidable! Kia KAHA!!!

It comes close to 6 weeks since our arrival in Tanzania and the final straight of 'Journey to the Source' is in sight. Individually we have faced our own challenges, and as a group perhaps even more so at times, with quite a history as a team. We have had a challenging time with what 'Journey to the Source' actually is - it has more levels than we can display on this blog. The description at the top is a little vague to say the least (and this post is also... oops), however, we have been working to clarify the core components that have brought us together for this wonderful journey. We built some bridges this week, funnily enough in the midst of the vast Rift Valley that we are about to ascend out of today. I am excited about the next 2 weeks we have together and know that we will make some real progress. Looking forward to sharing this with you soon :)

AUKJE

After leaving Arusha, we have been on our bikes again for a couple of days and after a day of 'cultural tourism' where we visited fishermen at Lake Manyara, tasted bananabeer at a Chagga home brewery and witnessed jumping Masai, we leave for Karatu today for our final bicycle section. I now have a love-hate affair with my Phoenix 'Fonix'.
And with the men i'm travelling with :)
The JTTS weeks on the bike have certainly pushed me out of my comfort zones in many ways, both physically and mentally. Another culture, another way of living, other sort of talk (and farts.. and burps. Lots of them :) No problem, but just not what i was used to). It is fun and adventurous, but also takes up a lot of energy. Living in a newformed group, with different nationalities and ways, another language, requires adaptation, but with many months ahead in Africa, i realise that staying close to who you are is important to get through the hard bits. Journey to the Source as a concept is on its way to be defined, but the inner journey is just as challenging.

A day in the journey

Here are the happenings from the evening of June 30 to July 1st:

Dave takes beautiful photos of the sun setting behind Mt Meru. Jon and Aukje join the fun and become Dave's models.
We are camping in a orchard with mint plants covering the ground. A private secondary school lies just behind a field of maize.
Cooked rice with tomato eggplant and onion sauteed for dinner with avocado spread on bread. Raisins and ginger snap cookies for dessert.
We discuss what the remainder of the journey will be like.
The plan is to get up early and have a full day of cycling to Arusha.

July 1st (Canada Day!!!! and a few of our friends birthdays: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!)

We get up after sunrise, pack up our tents and load our bikes. Breakfast is peanut butter and avocado open-faced sandwiches (they taste pretty good with a sprinkle of pepper) and a bowl of fresh slices of pineapple miniature bananas and a healthy sprinkling of Milo chocolate powder.

We walk our bicycles to the dirt road leading to the Arusha-Moshi Highway and the headmaster of the secondary school greets us. Over the course of an hour or more, we have a wide ranging conversation covering population growth, gas prices, climate change, the shortage of teachers in Tanzania. We film the headmaster during part of the conversation and promise to make him a movie star (just kidding).

So... we start cycling around noon. It is slow going up the hills. We stop for a lunch of rice and beans and cooked spinach outside a bar on the edge of a small town.

It is a long ride into Arusha on the Phoenix bicycles. Dark exhaust fumes engulf pedestrians and cyclists along the road when some large trucks zoom by. The sky is a little cloudy. The sun breaks through every now and then so I wear a wide-brimmed hat and long-sleeved shirt.

We arrive in Arusha just before twilight... and head the wrong way down the street to Arusha Backpackers Hostel. Oops. After ten minutes along busy streets and navigating traffic circles we arrive at the hostel. Tired. Wheely tired. We carry our gear up two tall storeys and store our bicycles on the main floor. We quickly shower (hot water - yes!, and the toilets actually have toilet seats!!!) and handwash some clothes.

We dine in the open air rooftop restaurant above the hostel - a little cold. The spicy lamb stew sets my tongue on fire - couscous and an extra order of rice help extinguish the flames. Aukje and Dave check their e-mail. schedule on Saturday June 14. We travelled over 50 km on Saturday with a cool wind blowing on our backs. The streets of Moshi were full of dalla dallas and buses belching black exhaust - quite a change from the laid-back rural villages we had grown accustomed to during the first part of our journey.

We greeted Marius Zakas (from Lithuania) on Sunday June 15. And, Georgia Temple travelled from Uganda and joined us this morning (Tuesday June 17) for a few days of our "Summit" in Moshi. Marius will climb Kilimanjaro with us. He brought a big bag of chocolate and energy bars!!!! We love him!!!!

The view of Mount Kilimanjaro was obscurred by clouds for the first three days. Here is a picture of Mount Kilimanjaro from the rooftop of the Kindoroko Hotel where we are holding are meetings, workshops and filming during the Summit. (pronounced Sah-may)

Progress

10 days into our Journey.. and what a journey it has been! Pangani to Muheza, to Korogwe, to Mombo, to Same. Puncture after puncture, habari after habari! Started cycling on our local 'Phoenix' bicycles in Pangani on June 7th, the 42 k dirtroad to Muheza costed us two full days. Kids yelling' mzungu mzungu', watching when we fixed our bikes, sleeping with the Franciscan nuns. Onto the main highway in Muheza, crazy traffic and many hills up.. and down again. The Usambara Mountains were the backdrop for the journey to the west, from Korogwe to Momba. Slept in a goatfield, where locals were watching us set up camp until late, more speeding busses and trucks, helmets strapped on tightly. Mombo turned out to be a ‘wild-west’ trucker’s town, dirty and alive with bustle and hustle. As we ride North towards Mt Kilimanjaro, vast expanses of Africa open to our left, while the towering ‘castle-like’ ramparts of the Pare Mountains swoop into the sky on our right. We pass through villages full or red earth huts, and exchange greetings and waves with the people of Tanzania. In the moments in between, we meet and converse with Tanzanian friends also on the road – “Karibu!” (Welcome), tell me of your day? Your world? We have much to discover, to exchange and to learn…and the road beckons to the North, as the sun sinks through African dust to the West.

Some Perspectives from the Team:

Jon - Extreme Senses from Journey to the Source...

The sounds of white imported japanese cars as they motor towards us at 130+ km/hr from behind, screaming "I'm not slowing down, get the hell out of my way!", to the sounds of cicadas as we fall asleep hidden behind a crop of maize under a vast clear African sky.
The awareness of constantly looking over my shoulder, to judge passing distances and knowing when to steer my "Phoenix Biscelli (bicycle)" off the hot sticky tarmac and onto the potentially puncture causing roadside grass full of the unexpected sharp objects and things that bite.
The tastes of melting over-ripe mangoes or the perfumey taste of under-ripe, goat soup at 6 am in the morning tasting much the same as oily sink water, delightfully sweet and refreshing chai tea and mango donuts.
The contrasting smells of humidity, gritty dusty roads, fresh salty air, the putrid smells of showers that resemble urinals, the rotting flesh of roadkill snake, turtle and unidentifyable squashed carcasses.
The visual extremes of immaculately manicured colonial African lawns and gardens to the rich and welcoming smiles of the Tanzanian people, charcoal burning in a hot iron ready to press the gleaming white shirt for the day, vast open spaces and landscapes unobstructed by human influence, however when looking more closely, appear village upon village, that merge perfectly into the landscape so much so that they are totally camoflage.

Aukje

Goat soup, chapatis, beans, chipsi mayai, rice, mango's, oranges, crumbly bread, tomato sauce.... the food here... it's interesting. How grateful i am for the fact that we can just buy the food that is available, because we can simply afford it, but still, how much i have to get used to it. Cycling all day (or walking uphill with the bikes, or fixing punctures, or waiting for bikes to get fixed, or just waiting.. this is Africa..) in the heat means you need fuel to keep pushing. But for me, it took me a minute (or two) before i could see that warm fatty goat soup in the morning as my fuel for the day. Yoghert was what my spoilt tastebuds wanted! Fresh fruit! Cruesli! Dark brown bread, cheeeeeeeeese, chocolate! But almost two weeks in Tanzania, and crumby bread with tomato sauce ('journey to the sauce!' :)) turned out to be a feast when you're a little faint. I never thought that i could crave chipsi mayai (chips in an omelette) and that i would eat so much sugar in one week. My teeth will be rotten after 8 months of soda drinks, loads of jelly and all the candies... Oh well!
Life is great! Keep eating, keep cycling...

Dave- Thoughts from day 2 on the road (tropical coastal hills)
Red African Earth is under my feet. I can feel its wisdom and rich life (and knowing) seeping up. Lush grass explodes from the rolling plain and that quality of light, that only Africa - and other “exotic” lands – posses, splashes all around. Golden, dusty, ancient and romantic light, that makes distant hills hazy, keen and smiling faces at once stoic and alive, and gifts mystique to the early morning hours and all those that follow.

This is Africa! Tanzania; a peaceful land, an ancient land, the land of our beginnings – our source, and a land very much alive today.

Today we have truly begun. As the day warms, we bobble along the earthy track (road0 weaving our way between rocks and stones, praying not to puncture and searching for the smooth hard clay that allows us to sit back and open to the world and people around us – to be part of the Journey.

This is exhilarating. Breathtaking to be free from the walls of a car, wind and new sensations on our faces, elements on our skin, we travel slowly, greeting people as we go and drink in this new land and its people.

Angus

Repairs ‘R’ Us

Last week we bought four new shiny black Phoenix bicycles from a wholesaler in Dar es Salaam. Jon asked the store owner if we could drop by after our journey to tell him how the bikes performed. The owner said he didn’t want us to come back in 6 weeks nor in 6 days…

The first day of cycling, my rear bicycle rack fell off one kilometer outside of Pangani. Luckily, two men helped Dave and I with a quick repair using some large washers. Jon repaired four punctures on his rear wheel that same day. It was a slow start to the journey.

I have lost count of the number of flat tires we have had. My bicycle has had a new rear rack installed, five broken spokes replaced, a new rear axle, new ball bearings for a pedal, and a new seat mount bracket. Needless to say, we are learning a lot about a bicycle repair and patience. J
Despite the unexpected number of bicycle repairs, we have been very determined to reach Moshi on bicycle by Sunday, June 15. We enjoy the times when we are cycling along the road taking in all the sights and sounds. And we make use of the down times when a bicycle is being repaired.

From Journey to the Source....

Tafadhali

From Dar es Salaam to Pangani with pics :)

JAMBO!!! (Greeting in Swahili)

We were in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, for the first three days of June. Dave and I looked at many bicycles with the help of a local guy, also named Dave, that Dave met at the airport. After teaming up with Jon and Aukje, we purchased some shiny black Phoenix bicycles and watched them being constructed.

The morning of June 4th we headed out to the bus stations. First stop was a small terminal where we dropped off a couple packages to forward to Moshi for our climb up Kilimanjaro. The next stop was a much larger bus station where we were to ride up to Pangani. Some people tried to mislead Aukje and I to the wrong ticket office, but Aukje figured out we were in the wrong office. We found the right ticket office and bought our tickets. Our bikes would not fit on one bus so we split up. Dave and I took the 8 a.m. bus and Jon and Aukje took the 10:30 a.m. bus.

Dave quickly made a friend named Ume on the bus ride (many people are really friendly in Tanzania). Ume gave Dave and I a tour of Pangani and we picked up some food while we waited for Aukje and Jon to arrive. Oh yeah, I lost my wallet while getting off the bus in Pangani but was incredibly lucky to have Ume retrieve it for me. Whew!

Pangani has a nice laid-back feel to the town. People like to greet us on the streets. The homes are single-story buildings with metal or thatched roofs. There are many small shops where we can buy local produce (oranges, coconuts, mangoes, bananas, and pineapples), rice and beans. We feel very safe in the town – even after nightfall there are young kids walking on the sandy roads. Quite a contrast from Dar es Salaam where we had to be constantly vigilant about vehicles while walking along the city streets (no traffic signals).

Yesterday (June 5), the team really came together to get us ready for our journey. Dave and Jon prepared the bicycles for the journey. Aukje wrote the script for an episode of YEOWtv. I shopped for supplies & cooking fuel – I didn’t get lost today… though I had to ask for directions twice on my way to the gas station. All of us had a fun time sliming the insides of our bikes’ inner tubes. The slime helps seal punctures in the tubes. It took us longer than expected to prep the bikes but they’re ready to go. The Phoenix is a very common bicycle in Tanzania – spare parts should be available, and we do have extra tire inner tubes.

Today (June 6) we loaded the bicycles with all our gear, food & water – a careful balancing act. We filmed scenes for YEOWtv. YEOWtv is a pilot project of Jon and Aukje’s – it is a 5-part series of short episodes aimed at a school-age audience: four characters with different personalities go to Tanzania in search of a treasure. The episodes tell the humourous story of their search.

We also filmed clips for a documentary on our “Journey to the Source”.

PINK PEOPLE – Lots of rain this morning made us temporarily forget about the intense rays of sunlight. We got burned on the beach at the mouth of the Pangani River while filming.

Filming took longer than expected, so we decided to stay another night in Pangani and ride out of town early tomorrow morning.

It is sooo often so...

Time and time again I build up something in my head that in fact does not exist. It is my own fear of the unknown that is playing tricks. Arriving in Dar es Salaam, my first time in Africa, the feelings of anxiety were consuming, nauseousness, sweaty palms, I'm sure you all recognise these. They are healthy feelings in this sense, as it means that I am out of my comfort zone, challenging new boundaries, facing my fears and in pursuit of personal growth through new experiences.

I can't believe we are here. Over two years and we are on the ground, in a very different shape and form, however, we are here, together ... this in itself is a wonderful celebration :)

"A strategy for success. Dave has been here for a few days now and Angus got in this morning as well (without his luggage... not so nice :( ), and they were waiting for us at the airport, which was awesome!!!

Catch ya later!

January 2008: Invitation Journey to the Source

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v17.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D66a4c8906d45aa06%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331259766%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D2FA31A478A0C14E4F361A3B023735F7FEAB3E372.2DFF0C25E3EA421F547DFDCE59D32377E13639D3%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D66a4c8906d45aa06%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DDvI-XYf8uSAzfc71tqQecnSS9nE&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
